For the Altay family, We redesign a building in Levent that was formerly used as a school. During the design process, we redefined the building's function according to the family's lifestyle, while making various extensions and reductions. The new facade and landscape design brought a completely fresh idenitity to the building.
We chose large windows in order to integrate the backyard into the interior, which is the key feature of the building. For the exterior, we created a warm and earthy backyard atmosphere in the hearth of city. In the landspace design, our attention was to evoke the feeling of walking through the forest.
The main aim of our conceptual design was to reinforce the client's ideas. We designed a unique interior space that blends the wabi-sabi design philosophy with modern touches. The monochrome color palette, requsted by the client, played a key role in the design process. Based on this idea, we used natural tones and massive materials in the interior and facade design.
On the basement floor, a centrally poisitoned open-plan fireplace, surrounded by comfortable armchairs, provides cozy atmosphere in thespace. Behind the fireplace lies the dining room, where we used a rammed-earth wall that commands attention when entering the space.
We were attentive to the guiding principles ot he wabi-sabi design style. These seven are: Kanso (simplicity), Fukinsei (asymmetry), Koko (austere sublimity), Shizen (naturalness), Duaisuzoku (freedom from habits); Sei-Jaku (Tranquillity); and Yugen (profound grace). Expressed by shizen, naturalness in design seeks equilibrium between being a part of nature and at the same time, different- Architecture that adapts to its environment also incarnates simultaneously artistic intention.
