Armchair
Ezgi Gündüz / 2021
As part of my studies at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, I participated in a workshop that encouraged experimantal approaches to furniture design for established brand. Whithinthis scope, I designed the Clash Armchair for Edra, proposing a sustainable production method.
One of the most important issues of our time, inspired the design: Edra's identity, edfined by bold and unique forms, interpreted here as a sculptural piece.
We are all part of an ecosystem --but what are truly doing for it?
Today, it is estimated that 100 to 150 million tons of plastic waste pollute our oceans and seas, accounting for nearly 80% of total marine litter. Each year, tis amount grows by another 6.5 million tons. According to the United Nations Enviroment Programme, an average of 13,000 pieces of plastic can be found per square kilometer in the ocean. The threat is undeniable--but are we aware?
The Clash Armchair embodies my response to these questions through a sustainable production process. Collected plastic waste is melted at high temperatures, blown and exturded into a material that can be freely shaped. Much like a drawing gesture, this material is poured through a pipe, giving each furniture piece a distinctive and unrepeatable form.

I believe it is far more meaningful to own a few pieces with a truly unique identity rather than thousands of objects without character.
